RN to BSN: An Educational Mobility Initiative

This regional effort is part of a statewide initiative that assists registered nurse (RN) graduates from diploma and associate degree programs to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The outreach program was developed after documentation of need was obtained from health care agencies and nursing professionals. It is designed for nurses in underserved areas without access to traditional university educational opportunities. Articulation agreements between East Carolina University and regional community colleges capitalize on the state's previous investment in nursing education.

The RN to BSN program is a cooperative effort between East Carolina University School of Nursing, Division of Continuing Education, and Eastern Area Health Education Center. Past outreach programs have been offered in Chowan, Carteret and Pasquotank counties. Currently there are programs underway in Wayne County and Pasquotank County.

  • One hundred and twenty-four RNs have obtained BSN degrees through this outreach effort. Thirty-six are currently enrolled.
  • Sites in Chowan, Carteret and Pasquotank counties have reached students most geographically distant from an existing BSN degree program.
  • Ninety-five percent of the nurses who entered the program in Chowan and Carteret counties completed it. Attrition rates were 10% and 4% respectively.
