Please read the following scenario and answer the questions ....
This is an actual situation that involved real high school students in Eastern North Carolina, the names have been changed. The conflict was involving two students Gracie and Janice. Please read the following background on both students:
Gracie, a 15 yr old black female 9th grader is having problems in her family living class. She is a B+ student and the only college prep student in the class. She is considered studious and responsible; no record of problems or violence in school. She is just beginning to date and is NOT currently sexually active. Gracie's mother is divorced and a full time office manager at a physician's office. Gracie's father is active in her life and she sees him twice a month.
Janice is a 16 yr old classmate and is a mother to a 1.5 year old son, whom she is raising on TANF (temporary assistance to needy families). The child's father does not pay support and is not involved in either the child's or Janice's life. Janice's mother is unemployed mother of 5.
The conflict began after Gracie gave a class report before Thanksgiving during which she spoke of her disapproval of unwed teens keeping their babies and stated preference for adoption to ensure a "quality of life" for the babies. Janice was of course very offended by her remarks. Gracie has been continually berrated (name calling, whispering, group laughter, talking behind her back) by Janice since the report. Janice's mother supports her actions by voicing her displeasure to a neighbor about Gracie's report. The school knows about the tension but so far hasn't taken any action. There are stories around school that suggest Janice and her mother have a history of fighting/brawling. Gracie is nervous and intimidated by Janice's behavior.
Yesterday, Janice "called" out Gracie for "dissing her". She threatened her and wants to fight Gracie.
