FOCUS and/or REVIEW
What makes us eat the way we do? What factors influence our eating behaviors? What foods should we eat to meet our bodies nutrient needs? What food do we eat too much of versus those we do not eat enough of? How do we know what foods we should and should not eat? Why is the Food Guide Pyramid important?

STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
Today, we will assess the impact of habits, family backgrounds, knowledge, busy schedules, and convenience on food intake. We will discuss nutrient needs and how to follow the food guide pyramid to meet those needs.

TEACHER INPUT
  • 1) What are factors that influence eating behaviors?
    • Discuss each and ask students for examples.
    • Discuss fast foods and how to incorporate these foods into a healthy diet.
  • 2) What is the definition of a nutrient?
    • Identify the 6 major classes of nutrients.
    • Discuss the function of each nutrient.
  • 3) What are the major nutrients missing in a teen's diet?
  • 4) What are the major food groups found in the food guide pyramid?
    • What nutrients do they provide?
    • What are good food choices versus bad food choices from each group?
GUIDED PRACTICE
Have students discuss strengths and weaknesses of fast foods and ways to incorporate into a healthy diet.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Have students complete food guide pyramid exercise to assess intake from each food group and Fast Food Fantasy exercise.

CLOSURE
  • Review main points.
  • Review next session (Food diaries, fad diet and nutrition resources)
  • Homework assignments:
