"Healthful Living" Objectives Met:
    Stress Management
  • Analyze potentially stressful situations to determine the degree of control an individual has over my own behaviors.
  • Clarify the degree of control she/he has over own behaviors in actual life situations.
  • Convert a series of negative self-messages to positive ones.
  • Develop a behavior change plan that includes rehearsal as a means to promote frequency of replacement of negative thoughts with positive.
  • Identify examples of potentially stressful losses.
  • Describe the natural progression of thoughts and feelings that accompanies losses.
  • Program stress consequences of actions which "a" confirm, and "b" deny own values.

FOCUS and/or REVIEW
We have spent three sessions on risk and protective factors. Change, loss, and stress are a part of our lives in this busy world we live in. Why do we take risks? And how can we do what we need to do to survive, manage stress, loss, and live well?

STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
Today we will look at friends, family, and community. What are the stressors in our lives? How to manage stress and where we can turn for help! We will review the Health History and look at gold setting for the Finish Line.

TEACHER INPUT
Your homework assignments on risks ranking and a paragraph returned. The papers showed thought and honesty - and I appreciate this. Thanks! Why do we feel a need to take risks? Last week you shared that risks can be positive, even though scary. That there are positive and negative ones.

Let's look at your personal Community.Your relationships and responsibilities within the community have a bearing on your stress and thinking. Look at the Eco-Map you completed for this week. What examples of interactions did you find outside the home? What did you add in the empty circle? Did you find more or less energy going out? More or less energy coming in to you?

What are the things you want to change or alter in your life?

How do you set goals for the future?

Do you set goals for a day ahead? A week ahead?..Years ahead?...

List three goals you want to attain over the next 1-3 years.

What prevents you from reaching these goals? Or SOARING like a balloon?

What holds you down? What holds a balloon from SOARING?

On the handout write in the circle (sandbags) some things that keep you from reaching goals.

Let's share these on the overhead.
(Typical are money, not smart enough, fear, putdowns) Many of these relate to how confident you feel.

Communication of Feelings

What happens when you don't let someone know how you are feeling?

(Anger, sadness, hurt, etc)

Eventually the feelings build up.

How can we let someone know How WE Feel? Without Blaming? Without Put-downs? By using "I" Statements. Look at examples on slides.

Take time to look at the list of "I" Statements in your handouts

Work together in groups of 2 or 4 and change the "YOU" (blaming) statements to "I" Statements. This is a very difficult concept.

Let's review the responses. Fill in on OVERHEAD the student responses and suggest revisions only if necessary - lets them try to work them out.

Listening Skills

Slides on listening verses hearing

Apply examples of the "Feeling" messages to listening
You feel...
You are feeling...
Sounds like you feel...
You want...
It's important to you...

Loss and Grieving
What are examples of loss? Let students describe any types or even own!

What are the stages of Loss or Grieving? Examples of each? On Overhead.
Denial            -No, I'm not sick, He didn't die
Anger            -That Dr. doesn't know anything, Leave me alone
  Bargaining      -I'll be good
Depression     -Withdrawn, won't eat, risk to self/others
Acceptance    -Get affairs in order, good-byes

How can we help people through these stages instead of ignore the necessary stages of loss and grief. We all feel loss for many things, however brief (i.e. a possum in the road, our pet, a friend or family member).

1) acknowledge the feeling

2) verbalize the feelings

3) look at options around the situation and feelings

4) share hugs and love

Life and Death are both stressful. What happens to our body when we are under stress? Examples of stress: (test, illness, fear, anger) (slide)

How do you feel when they happen? Ask for examples. (Sweaty palms, heart jumps, urge to pee, stomach knots, head hurts, run)

Why do these things happen? See handout on the physiologic aspects of stress.

How do you manage stress? Just when it happens? Regularly? Preventative?

Like taking care of your "car"?

Stress Management Techniques
What to you do when you feel stress? How do you know when you are stressed?

Included are two techniques to use to relax muscles (helpful for sleep and before a test), and Relaxing in a Special Place (helpful to renew yourself).

Many others for your age include: Sports, Dancing, Music, Singing, talking with a friend or trusted adult etc.

Goals for the Finish Line
It is time to reflect on the things you have talked about and learned about over the past several classes. Be good to yourselves. Think about your goals, how to help your balloon to SOAR, and how to reach these goals and future ones. Your last assignment for these sessions is to SET GOALS for the FINISH LINE!

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
  • Goals for the FINISH LINE

CLOSURE
Summarize activities and accomplishment of objectives in looking at stressors in life and management of these and feelings. What will help your life to SOAR? Prepare Goals for the Finish Line, based on identified concerns in your Health History.
