CLINICAL SITE DEVELOPMENT GRANT AWARDS

The number of students that can be accepted into undergraduate Schools of Nursing is directly related to the availability of appropriate sites for clinical education. Clinical sites must provide experiences that support the objectives of a particular course, have an adequate census for the number of students assigned to the area, have sufficient staffing to provide mentorship and role identification and provide competent preceptors if school faculty will not be present.

The development of new clinical sites is critical to support the increased enrollments in Schools of Nursing that has occurred in response to workforce demands for additional nurses. The General Assembly of North Carolina addressed the need for new clinical site development legislatively and continues its support. As a result, Eastern AHEC, a part of the N.C. AHEC program, has worked collaboratively with the Schools of nursing in our region to develop a variety of clinical sites throughout our twenty three counties.

Community Colleges and Universities submit proposals to work with specific health care agencies as a part of their educational program. Grant funding is used to reduce the financial and manpower strains that are sometimes incurred in acquiring resources and training students in the agency. Requests for grant proposals are sent to Community Colleges and Universities during late January or early February of each year. Grants are due into the EAHEC by April 1.
