The Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME), a collaborative effort of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and Eastern AHEC, provides high quality, cost effective continuing education designed to maintain, develop or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance of physicians. CME's mandate, consistent with that of both organizations, is to improve the quality of health care in rural, medically underserved eastern North Carolina through its provision of a comprehensive program of learning opportunities in both basic and clinical medical science. The Office of CME, nationally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), assures that the activities it offers satisfy the criteria for Category 1 of the Physicians Recognition Award of the AMA and the NC Credit 1 CME (provider initiated) required of all physicians licensed by the North Carolina Medical Board. Appropriate courses also qualify for recognition by various specialty organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. CME provides planning, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive array of activities including: symposia/conferences/workshops sponsored by the clinical departments of the School of Medicine; Community Based CME lectures provided by School of Medicine faculty to individual hospital medical staffs and medical societies served by Eastern AHEC, and the specialty rounds and conferences within the medical center. Although special emphasis is given to development of activities designed for primary care physicians; others are offered to specialists and sub specialists. When appropriate, other health care professionals will be welcomed, especially, when their inclusion contributes to team performance. The Office of CME will jointly sponsor selected activities with worthy, nonaccredited organizations whose goals are compatible with the School's CME mission, especially, when joint sponsorship serves to enrich the capacity of regional organizations and institutions to provide quality educational activities for their constituents.
