Eastern AHEC works with local public health departments as well as community-based health care groups to provide continuing education and technical assistance to all of the disciplines involved in public health. These professionals include public health nurses, environmental health specialists, social workers, health directors, boards of health, and others who work in public health settings. The public health field comprises more than 14 disciplines, and education programs cover topics as diverse as nutritional counseling, sewer system testing and dental care.

Eastern AHEC and the statewide AHEC program partner with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health. Faculty for many of the educational programs come from the UNC-CH School of Public Health, from other health science schools, and local AHEC sources.

A unique statewide system of planning and delivering continuing education for three of the major public health disciplines, environmental health specialists, public health nurses, and public health social workers, has evolved through a cooperative effort of the State Health Director and the School of Public Health at UNC-CH in co-sponsorship with the AHEC program.
