What Is A Social Worker And What Do They Do?
Social work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities to enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and to create societal conditions favorable to their goals. Social work practice consists of the professional application of social work values, principals, and techniques to one or more of the following ends: helping people obtain tangible services; providing counseling and psychotherapy for individuals, families and groups; helping communities or groups provide or improve social and health services and participating in relevant legislative processes. A social worker is a change agent, a helper who is specifically employed for the purpose of creating planned change. As a change agent a social worker is expected to be skilled at working with individuals, groups, and families, and in bringing about community changes.


Where Do Social Workers Work?
Almost all social workers are employed in the field of social welfare. Examples of social welfare programs and services are:
  • foster care
  • adoption
  • day care
  • Head Start
  • probation and parole
  • public assistance programs (such as Aid To Families with Dependent Children)
  • public health
  • suicide counseling
  • recreational services
    (such as Scouts and YMCA/YWCA)
  • minority services
  • veteran services

    Which Personal Skills Are Needed For A Social Worker?
    The practice of social work requires knowledge of human development and behavior; of social, economic, and cultural institutions; and the interaction of all these factors. A social worker is a change agent, a helper who is specifically employed for the purpose of creating planned change. As a change agent a social worker is expected to be skilled at working with individuals, groups, and families, and brining about community changes.


    What Type Of Training Is Required To Become A Social Worker?
    The term social worker is generally applied to graduates (either of bachelor's or master's degrees) of school of social work who are employed in the field of social welfare.
