What Is A Physician And What Do They Do?
Physicians diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries and teach people how to improve their health habits. Depending on their specialty, they can diagnosis and treat illnesses of children and/or adults through therapy, surgery or medication; teach people how to stay well; conduct research on disease and new methods of prevention and treatment; and teach medical students and residents.

  • private offices or group practices
  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
  • hospitals
  • medical schools
  • public health departments
  • government health agencies
  • research institutes

What Type Of Training Is Required To Become A Physician?
To practice as a physician, one must earn a college degree followed by a four year degree as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic (D.O.) from an accredited school and pass an examination for state licenser. At least one year of post-medical school experience is required, but most graduates of medical and osteopathy schools complete a longer period of specialty training called a residency. Depending on the area a Physician specializes In, additional training is needed.

What Should You Do To Prepare For A Physician's Career?
Generally, majoring in the sciences is not necessarily a prerequisite for admission to medical school. Courses that will increase your ability to communicate and get along with others are just as important as basic sciences courses. Therefore you should take a variety of courses in behavioral and social sciences, math, and the arts, as well as courses in the physical and biological sciences.
